A clear first run
Begin by finding one distinctive part of the target: an unusual corner, a long branch, or a small gap. Imagine the entire shape turning as one rigid object. Its pieces must keep the same connections and the same clockwise order throughout the movement. You are looking for a new orientation, not a rearrangement and not a reflection.

Mental rotation is the ability to imagine an object changing orientation while its internal structure stays the same. A task may use flat symbols, abstract polygons, familiar objects, cubes, or drawings that suggest three-dimensional forms. In every format, the central question is whether two views could represent the same object after rotation alone. In plain terms, the skill means mentally turning a visual stimulus clockwise or counterclockwise while preserving its structure.
This online mental rotation test uses original two-dimensional block arrangements. That makes the rules easy to understand on a phone, but it also means the result should not be compared directly with a 3D cube test, a paper-and-pencil battery, or a supervised assessment. Different stimuli ask related—not identical—questions of spatial visualization.
The essential distinction
Rotation changes where a shape points, but it never reverses the relationship between its parts. A mirror image changes the shape’s handedness: a feature that appeared in one clockwise order now appears in the opposite order. No amount of ordinary turning can make that reflected structure identical to the original.

It is best understood as a focused spatial reasoning exercise, not a complete intelligence test and not a medical, educational, or employment assessment.
A classic finding
In the classic 1971 study by Roger Shepard and Jacqueline Metzler, response time for correct same-object judgments increased as the angular difference between objects grew. The pattern supported the idea that people were carrying out an internal spatial transformation rather than recognizing every orientation instantly. This website draws on that general task idea; it does not claim to reproduce or validate the original experiment.

Related, not interchangeable
A mental rotation test focuses on recognizing an object across changes in orientation. A broader spatial reasoning test may also include paper folding, perspective taking, shape assembly, map reading, hidden figures, or pattern completion. These tasks can overlap, but their formats and scoring rules are not equivalent. Results from different websites should not be converted into one another simply because they all involve visual-spatial ability.

It mainly challenges your ability to hold a spatial representation and imagine it in a new orientation. Attention, visual comparison, short-term memory, strategy, practice, and response speed can also affect performance, so one session should not be treated as a pure measure of a single ability.
